University of the Philippines Los Baños

CEAT envisions itself to be a premier institution of higher learning in engineering education; a center of excellence in engineering instruction, research, and extension; a leader in the generation and promotion applied technologies; and a partner of the government, industries, and international agencies for agro-industrial development. It aims to upgrade engineering programs to be attuned to the present and future needs of the country.

Further, it aims to generate and promote appropriate engineering technologies and establish a strong academe-government-industry-international agency partnership. Such a partnership will lead to coordinated programs geared towards national and international development, hence making CEAT a model of other engineering schools in the country. At present, the Institute of Agricultural Engineering has been awarded as a Center of Excellence in engineering education by the Commission on Higher Education.

Degree Programs

From Agricultural Engineering, the program has expanded to Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering for the undergraduate. Likewise, the college now offers MS and PhD in Agricultural Engineering and MS degrees in Agrometeorology and Chemical Engineering.

These academic programs, which will help in addressing national concerns such as agriculture and food security, energy, and climate change and the environment, are in the pipeline: BS Mechanical Engineering, MS Food Engineering, MS Environmental Engineering, and MS Alternative Energy Engineering, MS Civil Engineering and PhD Chemical Engineering.

The engineering program produces engineers with the highest technical capabilities, entrepreneurial and networking skills, and commitment to the protection of the environment and natural resources.

  • BS Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering
  • BS Chemical Engineering
  • BS Civil Engineering
  • BS Electrical Engineering
  • BS Industrial Engineering

  • MS Agricultural Engineering
  • MS Agrometeorology
  • MS Chemical Engineering
  • PhD Agricultural Engineering

Research and Extension Programs

CEAT’s research, development, and extension (RDE) program also addresses agriculture and food security, energy, and climate change and the environment. To secure food security, it has established a lignocellulosic feedstock databank. It develops and improves food, feed, and fiber processing and distribution systems that include food engineering and processing, nanotechnology, and thermal engineering. It is also helping the national government improve its drying facilities to support the latter’s rice self-sufficiency program.

The College is likewise at the forefront of research on biofuels using Jatropha, sweet sorghum, and algae as alternative sources of energy. It has fabricated machines for oil mill facilities to demonstrate the viability of processing crude oil from coconut and Jatropha. It has established a village-level system for producing ethanol from materials found in the farms such as corn, cassava, and coconut toddy.

Further, CEAT is aggressively harnessing hydropower and wind energies to produce electricity and mechanical power, potentially for farm activities. Lastly, it is auditing the electrical energy use of the university to establish an electrical conservation plan that will not only benefit the university but also the environment.

To mitigate climate change and conserve natural resources, it is combining hydroponics (growing plants without soil) and aquaculture (fish farming) in integrated systems called aquaponics. It is evaluating concrete specimens for durability tests in simulated marine environment. Likewise, it is exploring appropriate technologies to transform solid wastes into beneficial products as well as improving the ‘green’ elements of building in the campus.

CEAT has two large lecture halls – the Electrical Engineering Auditorium and the CEAT Lecture Hall to accommodate large classes. Each engineering department has different laboratories and/or programs where students can have their practicum. These include: Agricultural Mechanization Development Program (AMDP); Innovative Engineering Materials Laboratory (InEM Lab), Instrumentation and Calibration Laboratory, and Management Systems Engineering Program (MSEP). There is also a CEAT Shop for mechanical fabrication.

Career Prospects

CEAT consistently produces top graduates in all fields of engineering for managerial positions in government and private agencies. Its outstanding track record of passing rates and top ranking scores in national licensure examininations for Agricultural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering ensures the immediate employment of its graduates.
