University of the Philippines Los Baños

The College started as an institute on November 28, 1974 and was reorganized into a college in 1983. It advocates and uses interdisciplinary, holistic, and integrative approaches to understand human-environment interactions. It envisions the development of human-centered, self-reliant, and ecologically stable communities by addressing basic human needs, resource utilization and management, environmental stability, and delivery of social services at the family and community levels in the Philippines and in Asia. As such, its mission is to advance the body of knowledge in human ecology to improve operational capabilities and to strengthen functional commitment in human nutrition and food, human and family development, community and environmental resource planning, and social development services. In essence, the College develops programs for research, training, and community service towards a desirable quality of life.

Degree Programs

The College of Human Ecology is one of the three schools offering planning programs in the Philippines. Through its Bachelor of Science degree program in Human Ecology, with Human Settlements Planning as a major specialization, it aims to generate professional planners who can design and implement plans that can ensure the long term sustainability of environmental resources while providing maximum development benefits to rural and urban communities. Graduates who intend to practice environmental planning as a profession take the Environmental Planning Licensure Examination (RA 10587).


BS Human Ecology.This program develops the student’s ability to understand human development in relation to the biological, physical, and socio-cultural environment. It equips students with the necessary skills and tools to participate in development programs, teaching, and research on man and his environment and provides him/ her with an ecological perspective to human problems.

BS Nutrition.This program aims to produce professionals competent in providing nutritional services to people from community nutrition programs to food service in institutions and hospitals. The students also learn how to assist in planning and evaluating food and nutrition programs at macro-levels and to conduct research in nutrition and related fields.

Research and Extension Programs

The College is known for its long-running degree and non-degree training programs on food and nutrition security such as the Barangay Integrated Development Approach for Nutrition Improvement (BIDANI). The BIDANI offers training programs for local government units such as the barangay integrated development planning (with emphasis on food and nutrition security, disaster preparedness and management, and hunger mitigation), and barangay management information system.

CHE conducts the review course for nutrition and dietetics to support the BS Nutrition graduates who take the Nutritionist-Dietitian’s Licensure Examination yearly. As a result, the College has consistently been recognized as the top performing school in nutrition and dietetics in the Philippines since 2008.

The College maintains teaching laboratories and daycare centers to enhance the competence and practical management skills of teachers and their apprentice students. It conducts capacity building for daycare workers and child care practitioners to equip them with appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitude in teaching daycare students and with proper understanding of daycare administration and operation.

The Child Development Laboratory (CDL), which was established in 1965 and the Day Care Laboratories (DCL), which were established in 1994 are extension programs that provide learning experiences for the holistic development of young children. These also serve as venues to enhance the competence and practical management skills of teachers and apprentice students and to test educational materials.

In 2011, the Elderly Development Program (EDP), the first –of-its-kind elderly program based in a university, was launched to cater to UPLB retirees and senior citizens of nearby communities. This monthly program provides activities, lectures, and free medical screenings to delay the onset of dependency and to provide a good quality of life for the elderly.

With the mandate given to local government units (LGUs) to prepare their respective development plans as stipulated in the Local Government Code of 1991 (RA 7160), the College officers capacity-building and technical assistance in the formulation of Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Provincial Physical Framework Plan (PPFP), and Regional Development Framework Plan (RDFP) at municipal/city, provincial, and regional levels, respectively.


CHE manages various lecture halls (e.g., Annex, IHNF, Bioassay Lecture Hall) and laboratories such as the Food and Nutrition Laboratories, Food Research Laboratory, Clothing and Textile Laboratory, Arts and Craft Laboratory, the Daycare and Child Development Laboratories, Day Care Resource Center, and the Child Development and Learning Resource Center. The GEO-HSP Laboratory is licensed with ArcGIS for Desktop Advance 10.1 Suite. The server PC also houses geospatial data such as satellite imageries, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), NAMRIA topographic maps, and political boundaries among others. The laboratory is used for courses particularly those on planning. Moreover, training and capacity building on local development planning using GIS is a regular extension work.


Career Prospects

The College’s graduates are involved in planning, managing, and making policies related to nutrition programs. They are engaged in research and management of programs related to food production, processing, distribution, and utilization. Graduates of nutrition may work as diet counselors, local nutrition workers, public health or community nutritionists, or hospital dietitians for the licensure passers. Graduates of human ecology, major in family development, may become administrators and program directors.

Further, they can also be writers of children’s books, agency consultants, and extension/development specialists in government and in non-government offices, researchers, or high school teachers. Others find employment in government agencies, non-governmental organizations and private corporations as town/city/provincial planning officers, professors and teachers, researchers, resettlement planners, development project managers, coordinators, analysts, specialists and evaluators, rural development directors/ officers, community development officers, environmental impact assessment team members, and environmental planners. Those involved in teaching may conduct research, community extension, and consultancies.
